About Terri Hart-Ellis
I am a noticer and photograph-er of small things; mostly moved by the tiny life of insects and animals, flowers, weather and naturally occurring textures. As a Wisconsin resident, these things can be found in my lakefront village seasonally. And once a year in early spring, when all are scarce here, I visit a little island of abundance.
I began taking photos of what some might consider minutia when we realized our youngest daughter's disability meant she would be nonspeaking. She uses pictures and a speech output app on her iPad to communicate. The pictures that have the most meaning for her are of her real life, taken from her real vantage point. Because of this, documentary photography has been part of my every day since she was a toddler. While I still do this to an extent, she can rely on symbols more and more now as a young teenager. Gradually cutting over to photographing for my own artistic communication purposes has been a beloved daily practice. I have things to say about the planet we live on and the waters that sustain it.
